Life Ball 2017: Know your Status!

Early Detection saves lives!

Getting tested and knowing your status is the first step in ending the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Transmission rates of HIV around the world remain stubbornly high. Out of the 36.7 million people living with HIV (PLHIV) around the world, 60% – approximately 14.5m people globally – do not know their status. In Europe, 1 in 7 people who are HIV positive are unaware of their immune status. We have the technology and medicine enabling earlier, easier diagnosis but stigma and discrimination still prevent people from getting tested for HIV.

Early Detection saves lives!

  • A combination of initiatives that focus on testing and education.
  • Communities, organizations, businesses, and government agencies coming together with the common goal of working to destigmatize HIV/AIDS and reduce barriers to testing.
  • A worldwide movement to encourage and increase HIV testing globally.
  • A year-long, international policy campaign that aims to normalize HIV testing.

Through our Know Your Status campaign, launched on World AIDS Day – 1 December 2016, our message is loud and clear: only those who regularly check their immune status can get timely treatment or appropriate preventive care and stop unknowingly spreading the virus to others.

Goals

  • Destigmatisation of HIV/AIDS and HIV testing
  • Significantly increase HIV testing in 2017 compared to previous years
  • Reduction of social, economic, political, and cultural barriers to testing

Implementation

The Know Your Status campaign is comprised of four main elements:

  • Fund HIV testing projects through international partner organizations
  • Testimonial and Social Media campaigns
  • Mobile testing stations at LIFE+ events and other events throughout Austria in collaboration with government ministries and local organizations
  • Youth education programmes and a new event – Life Ball Next Generation – in collaboration with Austrian Federal Ministries and partner organizations

WHAT DO KATE WINSLET, TATJANA PATITZ AND UMA THURMAN HAVE IN COMMON?

They all know their HIV status – and they are taking part in the Know Your Status campaign to help break stigma and encourage others to get tested. Their campaign testimonials were beautifully photographed by the legendary Peter Lindbergh. one of the most influential fashion photographers of the past 40 years and initiator of the supermodel phenomenon in the 1990s.

The LIFE+ band-aids, worn by Winslet, Patitz, and Thurman, are becoming “must-have” symbols in the fight against HIV. Notable Austrians like the Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Kern, Speaker of the National Assembly Doris Bures, City Councilwoman Renate Brauner, Cornelius Obonya, Karl Markovics or Conchita are also supporting the campaign with photos sporting the LIFE+ band-aids.

HIV Teststing:

Early Detection Saves Lives

“Educational work and knowing one’s own immune status are the necessary foundation to fight HIV/AIDS sustainably. KNOW YOUR STATUS provides approaches that can be implemented quickly and used around the world.”

Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Kern

HIV testing is the first step in maintaining a healthy life, reducing the spread of HIV, and ending the AIDS epidemic. By getting regularly tested and knowing your status, you can take the necessary steps to protect your health and that of others – either receiving timely treatment or the appropriate preventive care.

If you knowingly live with HIV, you can begin treatment such as antiretroviral therapy (ART). Such treatment can keep you healthy and help you live a normal life by lowering your viral load, reducing HIV-related illness, and decreasing the spread of the virus to others. According to the Center for Disease Control in the U.S., properly taking ART daily “can reduce an HIV-positive person’s chance of transmitting HIV by as much as 96%.”

If you learn that you are HIV-negative, knowing your status can help you take preventative measures, regarding sex, drug use, and health care, to protect you from HIV. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, also known as PrEP, is one such daily medication that can prevent HIV infection in persons who are HIV-negative and at very high risk for HIV. Taking PrEP once a day can maximize your protection against HIV by around 99%.

For more information about PrEP here and here.

In most countries, you can get tested for HIV at hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, and places purposely designated for HIV testing by government agencies and local non-profit organizations. HIV test results are confidential and some places even provide anonymous testing. Wherever you choose to get tested, make sure they provide counseling services. Counselors can help you understand your test results and teach about situations and behaviors in which you risk contracting or transmitting HIV. Counselors can teach you ways of protecting yourself and others from the virus and refer you to appropriate, local resources about HIV/AIDS.

Here you can find testing locations in Austria, in Europe and in the United States.

Life+ powered by T-Mobile

The free app „Life+ powered by T-Mobile“ for Android and iOS.

The free app “LIFE+ powered by T-Mobile” for Android and iOS is provided by T-Mobile to sustainably help people to know their immune status. The app also includes a reminder service for the user’s next HIV-test, route planner to find the next testing site of Aids Hilfe in Austria, and links to further information on the topic.

T-Mobile donates 1 Euro per downloaded app to its long standing project partner Diversity Care Wien (home nursing services for people with HIV and AIDS), to the Austrian Aids Hilfe for mobile testing stations, and further international HIV/AIDS charity projects. For further information and downloading the app please to to www.t-mobile.at/lifeball.

Mobile HIV Testing Stations:

To normalize and destigmatize HIV testing and reduce barriers to testing, LIFE+ is collaborating with the seven regional AIDS Hilfen Österreich which provide free and anonymous HIV tests in Austria. Our goal is to make this service as ubiquitous and easy to access as possible. Mobile test stations by the seven regional providers will be used during a variety of events and activities throughout 2017 including LIFE BALL 2017.

Supporting HIV Testing Projects with International Part Organizations:

In addition to our work with local organizations in Austria, in 2017, LIFE+ will continue to fund a variety of community-based, government-supported programs that assist different target populations in regions around the globe; however, each program will either focus entirely or partly on HIV testing. With our policy campaign Know Your Status, we want to get back to the basics and help high-risk communities take the first step in eliminating the spread of the virus and ultimately end the AIDS epidemic by getting tested.
