amfAR’s EpicRide to Life Ball

The Life Ball weekend 2018 started with a unique motorcycle tour. amfAR celebrated its 25th anniversary just like Life Ball. Therefore, it seemed only logical to plan something special together to commemorate this “double silver wedding”. The EpicRide to Life Ball was organized by amfAR in collaboration with the association behind Life Ball, LIFE+, and took place from May 30th to June 1, 2018, bringing together a group of prominent bikers to raise money for amfAR’s life-saving research to find a cure for HIV/AIDS. The bikers traveled from Zurich to Vienna and stopped in various cities along the road to promote the causes of amfAR and LIFE+.

The Route

The route included stops for press events along the way to raise awareness for the goals of amfAR, LIFE+, and the fight against AIDS. Companies like Gilead, Red Bull, SalzburgerLand Tourismus and the City of Vienna supported this unique awareness campaign. The funds raised with amfAR’s EpicRide to Life Ball are supporting amfAR’s “Countdown to a Cure for AIDS”, an innovative initiative that works towards the goal to develop the scientific basis for a cure of HIV/AIDS by the end of 2020.

After a kick-off event in Zurich, the riders started their journey towards Bregenz in Austria. On May 31, they moved on to Salzburg and stopped along the way at Swarovski Crystal World in Wattens (Austria). Swarovski has been a long-standing partner of LIFE+ and Life Ball with its Swarovski Crystal of Hope and precious crystals for the fashion shows of Life Ball.

The day ended in Salzburg with a fundraising dinner at Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron closeby. On June 1 2018, the EpicRiders welcomed Austrian Airlines’ Life Ball plane at its touchdown at Salzburg Airport. Austrian Airlines specially branded a Boeing 767 for Life Ball 2018 with financial support by Wien Tourismus. Approximately 200 VIPs had a first stop at Salzburg Airport on the Austrian Flight OS 1088 on June 1, 2018 at 7.30am. A fan zone at the airport gave private individuals the opportunity to join the EpicRiders in welcoming the plane from New York. As the passengers journey on to Vienna continued, the EpicRiders took a scenic route to original film locations of The Sound of Music and enjoyed a brunch at the Mirabell palace in Salzburg following an invitation of the Ropac Gallery, one of Austria’s leading art galleries. This exclusive brunch included an auction that raised money for AIDS aid-projects of LIFE+. For the last leg of their tour, the EpicRiders continued towards Vienna, where they arrived before dusk and just in time for the Life Ball weekend.
