The

Golden

Fleece

After ‘to love’,

the most beautiful verb

in the world is ‘to help’.

Bertha von Suttner

Sent by the god Hermes

,

he

winged

golden-haired

ram

Chrysomeles carries the roy-

al children Phrixus and Helle

over the sea on his back to save

them from their evil stepmother

Ino. Once they have reached

their destination, a temple is

erected in honor of the help-

ful ram. Hung on an oak tree

and guarded by a dragon, its

golden pelt is worshipped as

a sacred relic. The Argonaut

Jason, sent to steal the Golden

Fleece, achieves this with the

help of the sorceress Medea.

But it does not bring them hap-

piness. Those motivated solely

by greed and self-interest will

never know the satisfaction of

altruistic kindness.
