will be held for

the 23

time. Celebrated in the spirit of the ancient

rite of spring, Ver Sacrum, the event will proclaim a

message of new beginnings and breaking with tra-

dition and convention. The Life Ball weekend spot-

lights those who confront the challenges every day

of the still fatal effects of HIV/AIDS. By generating

substantial donations, the Life Ball supports impor-

tant work in national and international HIV/AIDS

projects. In the name of all of the people who work

so tirelessly for those organizations I would like to

thank you for the dedication you show by attending

the Life Ball.

This Style Bible is intended to guide and inspire you

as you design your costume. Ver Sacrum was an im-

portant inspiration for artists of all genres working

in Vienna around the turn of the nineteenth centu-

ry, influencing Gustav Klimt’s golden paintings as

well as Igor Stravinsky’s

Sacre du Printemps

. The

principles of the avant-garde—experimentation

and innovation, individualism and self-determina-

tion—are a wonderful metaphor for the Life Ball and

its aims. The Life Ball 2015 marks the return of the

characters and personages created and enacted by

the Vienna Secessionists who, united in the struggle

for change, renewal, and progress, join in an exuber-

ant celebration of life.

I look forward to joining with you in transforming

Vienna’s city hall into a shining golden symbol of ac-

ceptance in a multifaceted culture of diversity.
